Hello, my name is Alan Smith and I have been an member and associate of Pre-Paid Legal Services for over 20 years. I am originally from Iowa and moved to Calilfornia over 30 years ago hoping to find gold. No, not really, but I did find two types of gold: the gold of the California sun and a golden opportunity with Pre-Paid Legal. As a farm boy I grew up knowing the rewards of hard work and perseverance. So, I started out doing sales for air-freight and moving companies such as United and Mayflower, worked hard and earned a very good living. I live in the upscale community of Scotts Valley, California in a house that looks over a valley in the front and Redwoods in the back. I've been married to my wonderful wife, Jennifer, for 27 years. And we have a beautiful daughter, Lauren, who is 24 and works in research at Stanford University's Longevity Center.
For a long time I did Pre-Paid Legal very part-time. However as I got older, I realized that I would still be doing freight sales years from now if something didn't change. I could not see myself, a wizened old man, making cold calls into my eighties. I started researching companies that paid residual income, that is they pay associates dividends every year for each individual sale that is made, not one time only. Then I found Pre-Paid Legal. Or, it found me.
At first when I looked into multi-level marketing businesses I was skeptical. So I devised a few tests that I would run a company through before I chose to work with them. These are the questions I recommend asking whenever looking into a new business opportunity.
• Does the product make practical sense? • Will people need this product even in a recession? • Is the company reputable? • Is there a good compensation plan for sales associates with residual income? • Is there a good training available • Are there mentors available? • In order to have more support, can this be done as a team? • Will doing this make my life better? • Will doing this help others to make their lives better?
Obviously, Pre-Paid Legal passed all of these tests with flying colors. The last two questions I think are crucial ones, no matter what business you're in. The way that we conduct our businesses should reflect our values. I value hard work, but I also value my time with my family. I like to be free to go to Southern California and see my niece take some of her first steps. I like to see the renovation my son has done on his house in Idaho. I like to be free to take more than a week's vacation with my family in Hawaii. Some people say that the way to spell love is T.I.M.E.. I agree.
It is not enough, however, to make enough money to benefit myself to make a leap into business. I must feel we are able to help others find income in a time when there are so few jobs to be had. Both my wife and I love creating teams and encouraging them, working side-by side. In fact, one of my greatest joys is to say to someone "Congratulations! You have triumphed over the poor economy by working hard and smart."
