Entrepreneurship has long been Mike Matheny’s passion, from starting a successful advertising venture as a teenager, to running a profitable carpet cleaning business for the past 25 years.
“I knew early on that I didn’t want to be ‘ordinary’ and that I wanted to control my own destiny,” said Mike. “Being my own boss seemed the best way to accomplish this.”
Entrepreneurship runs in Mike’s family. The son of an accomplished businessman who has started and operated more than 20 companies himself in the U.S. and abroad, Mike said, “I learned a lot watching my dad; I wanted to follow in the footsteps of a successful man.”
Born and raised in Southern California, Mike began his first business, On the Road Productions, at just 17 years old. He designed logos and other promotional items – including hats, stickers, buttons, and T-shirts – for many well-known rock bands and music groups.
As a young adult, Mike entered the carpet cleaning industry, purchasing his first traditional franchise, ServiceMaster, in Southern California. He later purchased three of the largest carpet cleaning companies in Central California and formed the corporation, Simply Clean Care, Inc. Based in Monterey, Simply Clean Care now ranks in the top five rug-cleaning plants in the U.S.
Over the years, Mike has demonstrated his ability to own and operate more than one venture at a time. He owned and ran, for example, Central Coast Growers, a thriving, 300-acre cut flower company that grew and shipped thousands of flowers each year across the U.S. He also invested in and oversaw two concrete companies, one in Northern California and in Southern California simultaneously.
Over the past decade, Mike became interested in personal franchising opportunities and expanded his leadership and management experience even more. “While earning a good income and building a successful business, I also learned a lot more about who I am and what more I can do with my life,” said Mike.
Serving as a personal franchising mentor, he said, is one way that he would like to give back to others. “I have had the privilege of being mentored by some very talented and influential people in the leadership industry,” said Mike. “Now I’d like to pay it forward and help others achieve their dreams.”
